Support for action leading to sustainable development in the UK

Many organisations have been created to support political, domestic and business activities that relate to sustainable development. They can provide inspiration and an outlet for action. Many have active local groups, membership magazines and web sites

Campaigners

Some well-known organisations involved in political lobbying within the UK include The Soil Association, Friends of the Earth, Greenpeace, Forum for the Future and the Association for the Conservation of Energy (ACE).

Government backed initiatives

The UK Government created 'Going for Green' - a not for profit company and supports the Global Action Plan - a registered charity. Most (if not all) British Local Authorities have adopted Local Agenda 21 - an international movement.

Trade Associations & Professional Bodies

The British Government encouraged the formation of ESTA (the Energy Systems Trade Association). Whereas the Institute of Social & Ethical Accountability is a good example of a professional body that has been created to reflect both a new consciousness within the business community and a response to a demand caused by developments in national and international legislation.

Local networks

Because there is a growing awareness among members of a wide variety of organisations that they share concerns about the environment and are interested in the application of related (sustainable development) solutions, local networks have grown up. Local examples within the Staffordshire county area are SBEN - a forum for business and Sustainable Staffordshire, which has a more general remit.
