AGM 2005 - Sustainable Staffordshire says ‘Thank You’ to Pat & Eddie

At the Annual General Meeting, held in Staffordshire County Hall on Wednesday 16th March, members of Sustainable Staffordshire were told by their Chair, Pat Callaghan, that she was stepping down from that role. We also learnt that this was probably the last time that Eddie Boden would give a welcome speech on behalf of Staffordshire County Council, as his term as Leader ends next month. Accolades and applause from around the Council Chamber showed how much the work of these two individuals (pictured left) has been appreciated.

Guest speaker Dr Adrian Murphy explored the role of business in creating a more sustainable future. The first presentation was given on behalf of his colleague David Middleton and entitled ‘Sustainable Development as a Business Opportunity’;  the second dealt with the work of the ‘National Industrial Symbiosis Programme’, which Dr Murphy leads, making the link between one company’s waste and another one’s resource, for example turning animal bones into bricks! The volume and variety of questions demonstrated how relevant these ideas are.

Reports from Pat Callaghan and Treasurer, Geoff Wright, explained how Sustainable Staffordshire continues to work with the County Council, our principal sponsor, to put on events, whilst developing a growing independence through the contribution in time and funds of its other members and outside bodies, such as Government Office for the West Midlands. A new Executive Committee of 10 was elected, chaired by Paul Newman, with Vice-Chairs Pat Callaghan, Beryl Metcalf, Ian Mitchell and Elizabeth Sasse. Geoff Wright has agreed to continue his dual role as Secretary and Treasurer and the elected members are Dennis Cornes, Trevor Stokes, Peter Curley and John Russell.
